Ten Steps to Succes

"In order to succeed, your desire for success must be greater than your fear of failure."

Looking back, what kept me behind was fear. I was afraid that I would fail. It kept me from challenging myself and moving forward because the possible just seemed impossible. Over the semester, my Professor gave our class valuable information that we could carry with us throughout our careers. I appreciate making goals in a form of steps or lists because it makes the overall task seem less daunting.

Here are ten steps for those who are just starting out. If you have already accomplished some of the steps, comment below and tell me what you have learned or any advice that you can share.

1. Research

Not only does research help you know what the industry accepts, but it also gives inspiration for your own shoots. Rather than just looking at other photographers, take notes on what they do and don't do. Study their lighting techniques and the way that they pose their models. I do not mean copy their work, I mean for you to do this so that you can take your photography in the right step that professional photographers are taking their photography.

Two portrait photographers that I am currently inspired by are Lara Jade  and Karrah Kobus

2. Self Assign

Once you know what direction you want to take your photography into. Assign yourself a task. Challenge yourself and push yourself toward your goals as a photographer. Don't be afraid to do things on your own, people will start to notice.

3. Create a Website

Making a website may seem like a lot of work and a little unnecessary, but from first hand experience it is well worth it. Having a website will make showing your portfolio much more professional and your images will come alive.

4. Market Yourself

You could be doing all the right things, but if no one knows who you are there is no point. Find ways to put yourself out there. Don't be afraid to take risks. Promote yourself. Be shameless.

5. Network

Building relationships is very important, especially in this industry. Once you connect with someone continue to make connections with them. Sometimes it may seem like you are going no where. Don't forget to continue to stay positive and strong. Going out into the community and joining groups can also be a great way to start.

6. Time Management

It is important to know your limits and how far you can take certain tasks. Organize everything daily. Sometimes you may have to say "no" to something if you know that your plate is already full. Take time to rest and spending time with those you love. The magic of balancing life can be tricky, but once you figure it out it is smooth sailing.

7. Own Your Work

Be confident in what you have worked hard to do. Continue to build your style and continue to keep working.

8. Be Intentional

Many times it may seem like you are just going through the motions and your work is going no where. Be intentional with your tasks. Don't waste time. Make your relationships count and accomplish your goals.

9. Create a Business Plan

Even though you may just be starting out, creating a business plan can give a great boost to your motivation and where you want to be in a few years. Evaluate yourself and give yourself tasks towards what you eventually want to be.

10. Intrinsic Motivation

This was by far, one of the most valuable pieces of information my Professor gave to our class. Instead of making others motivate you, motivate yourself not because you have to, but because you want to. Sometimes there will be no one around to give you a pat on the back or an applause because you did a photo shoot. Do it because you know without working, you will not be where you want to be in life. Be the change and motivation you want to see in your life. Angela Lee Duckworth describes it as "grit" which means to have passion and perseverance for long-term goals. She says that grit is having stamina for the future no matter what happens in life.
